Most people call it a “Hand of God.” Unfortunately, a failed drug test and scandal damaged his career.


3. Franz Beckenbauer: (1964-1982) Franz is the only soccer persona to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a coach. He was a great defender. He led Germany to three consecutive European Cups from 1974-1976, and won the World Cup in 1974. Years later, he lifted the World Cup trophy as a manager.


4. Johan Cruyff: (1964-1984) he won nine league titles, and had an incredible 1974 World Cup, where he scored two goals against Argentina and Brazil, but then fell in the finals to West Germany. He was known as a very smart player with lots of finesse. Cruyff also went on to later be a successful manager.


5. Lev Yashin: (1951-1970) this goalie from Russia has saved almost 200 penalty shots throughout his successful career. He played for the same club in Moscow for 22 seasons. Known for wearing black while playing, Yashin is considered the best goalie of all time. In 1963, he won the European Player of the Year Award.


6. Eusebio de Silva Ferreira: (1961-1978) in the 1966 World Cup, Eusebio scored nine goals for Portugal until they were finally beaten by England in the semifinals. Known as “The Black Pearl,” Eusebio was fast, skilled, and strong. He is considered to be the first African player to gain worldwide fame.


7. Bobby Charlton: (1956-1974) he scored 49 goals and 106 caps for the country of England, winning the World Cup in 1966 and the European Cup in 1968. He was one of the most athletic and graceful players to have ever played the game. He was named European Player of the Year in 1966. Charlton was also one of the few survivors of the Munich plane crash in 1958, which took the life of eight of his Manchester United teammates.


8. Stanley Matthews: (1932-1965) Matthews is considered to have had the longest career of all-time, spanning over three decades. He retired at the age of 50. He was considered an expert at dribbling, earning the nickname, “Wizard of Dribble.” He was the first professional soccer player to ever be knighted.


9. George Best: (1963-1984) in 1968, Best was chosen as European Player of the Year as he led Manchester United to its first European Cup win. He was known as a charismatic and exciting player to watch. He died in 2005, and thousands over people came to his funeral in East Belfast.


10. Ferenc Puskas: (1943-1966) this prevailing striker played for Hungary and Spain, and has won an Olympic gold medal, three European Cups, and one World Cup. He scored an amazing 84 goals in 85 international matches and 514 goals in 529 matches in Hungarian and Spanish leagues. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2000 and died in 2006 of pheumonia.
